Guide
How much should I pay for a used car?
The right price for a used car isn't a number from a guide; it's what the same car sells for near you. Here's how to work it out.

$9,894 lessEveryone wants a number. The honest answer is: pay no more than the same car costs elsewhere nearby, and ideally less. Here's how to find that number for your car.
Start with what the same car costs nearby
Look at listings for the same year, trim and drivetrain within about 100 miles. Ignore cars with far more miles or a bad history. The middle of what's left is a fair price; the lower part is a good one.
For popular models, we've done this for you: see used car deals by model, with typical prices by year and real below-market listings.
Adjust for miles
A car with fewer miles than average for its year is worth more; more miles, less. As a rough rule, 10,000 extra miles is worth a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on the car.
Adjust for condition and history
- Accidents lower value, even if repaired.
- Branded titles (salvage, rebuilt, flood) lower it a lot.
- One owner and service records add a little.
- Certified Pre-Owned adds a warranty, which is worth something. Compare certified with certified.
Add the costs that aren't on the sticker
Tax, title and registration are unavoidable. Dealer fees vary, and some are negotiable. Ask for the out-the-door price. See dealer fees you can push back on.
Then check the exact car
Paste the listing. We'll look for the same car nearby for at least $1,000 less, after shipping.
Questions
Should I pay the Kelley Blue Book price?
KBB is a useful guide, but what matters is what the same car costs near you right now. Compare real listings.
How much below asking price can I offer?
It depends on how the car compares. If the same car is listed for less nearby, offer around that price and show the listing.
What's the average used car price in 2026?
The median asking price for a used car is in the mid-$20,000s, but that tells you little about a specific car. Compare the same car.
