Used Ford Explorer deals

The Explorer is a roomy three-row SUV that depreciates faster than some rivals, so used ones can be good value. But there are many trims and engines, and prices for the same Explorer vary a lot.

Which Explorer to look for
- 2020 and later (6th generation): Base, XLT, Limited, ST, Platinum, King Ranch and Timberline, plus ST-Line. A hybrid was offered 2020–2022.
- Engines: 2.3 turbo four in most; 3.0 twin-turbo V6 in the ST and Platinum.
- XLT is the most common trim and the easiest to compare.
Where Explorer buyers overpay
- ST versus ST-Line. The ST has the powerful V6; the ST-Line only looks like it. Check the engine.
- RWD versus 4WD. Both are common. Compare the same drivetrain.
- Recalls. The 2020 model had several recalls. Make sure they've been done; a VIN check shows open recalls.
- Fleet history. Many Explorers were rentals or police cars (the Police Interceptor Utility). Check the history report.
