Is this Facebook Marketplace car overpriced?
Private-seller prices on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are all over the place. How to check one against the same car at dealers nearby, and avoid scams.
Updated November 1, 2026

Private sellers often price their cars based on what they owe, what they hope for, or what they saw once online. Some are bargains, many are overpriced, and a few are scams. Here's how to tell which is which.
Check it against the same car at dealers
A private sale should usually be cheaper than a dealer, because there's no warranty, no reconditioning and no return window. If a dealer nearby has the same year, trim and miles for less, the private price is too high.
Paste the Marketplace or Craigslist link and we'll check dealer listings nearby:
Paste the listing. We'll look for the same car nearby for at least $1,000 less, after shipping.
Get the details right
- Ask for the VIN. It confirms the trim and lets you run a history report. A seller who won't share it is a red flag.
- Check the title. Is it in the seller's name? Clean, or salvage/rebuilt?
- Confirm the miles on the dashboard in person.
Signs of a scam
- A price far below everything else, with an urgent story (moving, deployed, divorce).
- Requests for a deposit before you see the car, or payment by gift card, wire or payment app.
- The car is "with a shipping company" or "in storage."
- The seller won't meet or talk on the phone.
Signs of a fair private deal
- Priced below the same car at dealers, with a clean title in the seller's name.
- Service records, and the seller is happy for a mechanic to inspect it.
- You meet in a safe public place, and pay securely once the title is ready.
