How to find the same car for less
Found a car you like? The same car is often for sale nearby for $1,000 or more less. Here's how to find it, step by step.
Updated November 1, 2026

Once you've picked a car, you've done the hard part. The next step is the one most people skip: checking whether the same car, not a similar one, is for sale nearby for less. It often is.
What "the same car" means
- Same year, make and model.
- Same trim. A Honda CR-V EX and EX-L are different cars with different prices.
- Same drivetrain. FWD, AWD and 4x4 change the price.
- Similar or fewer miles.
- Clean history. No accidents or branded title.
Color and small options matter less. Decide how much they matter to you.
Step by step
- Get the VIN of the car you found. It confirms the exact trim and drivetrain.
- Search within 100 miles on a few big listing sites, filtered to the same year, trim and drivetrain.
- Sort by price, then skip anything with many more miles or a bad history.
- Compare out-the-door prices, not sticker prices.
- Weigh the distance. Driving an hour to save $2,000 is usually worth it. Shipping a car 300 miles typically costs a few hundred dollars.
The shortcut
That's what 1000off does in a few seconds: paste a listing and we search live dealer inventory for the same car, nearby, for at least $1,000 less after estimated shipping.
Paste the listing. We'll look for the same car nearby for at least $1,000 less, after shipping.
What to do when you find it
- Buy the cheaper one, or
- Use it to negotiate. Show the first dealer the cheaper listing. Many will match or come close. See how to negotiate with a cheaper listing.
Questions
Is it really common to find the same car cheaper?
Yes. Dealers price independently, so the same year and trim can vary by thousands in one city. See Same car, different price.
Does a higher price mean a better car?
Not necessarily. Check miles, history and condition. Often the cheaper car is just as good.
How far should I look?
Start within 100 miles. For trucks and less common cars, looking farther can pay off.
