Car prices vary by region. Trucks cost more in some states, convertibles in others, and every dealer sets its own prices. Looking beyond your town can save real money, as long as the savings beat the cost of getting the car home.

The simple math

Worth it if: price difference − shipping (or travel) − any extra fees > what your time is worth to you.

A car $3,000 cheaper and 250 miles away is almost always worth it. A car $600 cheaper and 800 miles away usually isn't.

What shipping costs

Open-carrier car shipping is typically:

Prices rise for trucks and large SUVs, enclosed carriers, rural pickup or delivery, and busy seasons. Get two or three quotes. 1000off estimates shipping and only shows a car as cheaper if it still is after the high end of that estimate.

Or go get it

A one-way flight or train and a drive home can cost less than shipping, and you can see the car first.

Can I buy a car out of state without seeing it?

Many people do, with a third-party inspection and clear photos. Check the dealer's return policy.
